OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 23.04.2002. The International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), and Carl Zeiss of Oberkochen Germany, announced today that Carl Zeiss will become the first Corporate Sponsor of the ‘VISION 2020: The Right to Sight initiative,. VISION 2020 is a global programme of the World Health Organization (WHO) and IAPB, with a coalition of a number of international Non-Governmental organisations. VISION 2020’s mission is to eliminate unnecessary blindness in order to give all people in the world, particularly the millions of needlessly blind, the Right to Sight.

Carl Zeiss – one of the world’s leading manufacturer of medical equipment for the eyecare professional – has accepted the invitation by the IAPB to become the first Corporate Sponsor and will provide funding for the VISION 2020 initiative, The Right to Sight. Michael Kaschke, Board Member at Carl Zeiss and President of the Carl Zeiss Medical Group stated that he was extremely pleased to be able to provide support for VISION 2020: The Right to Sight. “Carl Zeiss was founded on the ideals of cutting-edge science, quality manufacturing and social responsibility. VISION 2020: The Right to Sight is an initiative in which our funding and technology can best be put to use. We are convinced that this is a meaningful investment to support the creation of worldwide eyecare standards.”

Dr. Mike Whitlam, the newly appointed CEO of the IAPB, stated that success in battling blindness can only be possible if all parties pull together in a concentrated effort. “In addition to the WHO and various national and non-government organizations, we also need partners from the eyecare industry”. According to Foster, 80% of the world’s blindness is avoidable, and the treatments available today are considered to be the most successful and effective of all health interventions. He added: “We are delighted that the first Corporate Sponsor joining VISION 2020: The Right to Sight will be Carl Zeiss, one of the most highly regarded names in healthcare.”
