Carl Zeiss Meditec will introduce its new CALLISTO Eye data management and documentation system for the first time at the Congress of the ESCRS in Berlin. Dr. Michael Kaschke, President and CEO at Carl Zeiss Meditec, describes the system as follows: “OR work is frequently quite stressful for doctors and nursing staff. However, concentration, precision and diligence are indispensable for surgical success. It is therefore immensely helpful if procedure steps can be simplified. Enter CALLISTO Eye from Carl Zeiss Meditec, a system that combines OR processes with surgical planning and the postprocessing phase, increasing the level of efficiency, and thereby helping to reduce treatment costs.”

CALLISTO Eye was specifically developed for the needs of ophthalmic surgeons. The data management and documentation system provides a fast and comprehensive overview of all surgery-relevant data. Through the availability and clear allocation of all patient-specific data, mistakes can be largely avoided. When surgery schedules are rearranged, CALLISTO Eye provides rapid OR planning updates at the push of a button.

The system displays all critical patient and treatment data on a touch screen directly in the OR. Physicians are provided with a quick overview of all of scheduled surgeries, diagnostic data and patient medication. The system’s simple handling features include data entry and access capabilities during the OR. Utilized consumables such as intraocular lenses (IOLs) are registered with the help of a barcode scanner, and thereby directly entered into the system.

While the overall work effort is reduced with CALLISTO Eye, data security is increased. In addition, the entire surgical procedure is documented on video. Films and individual frames can be displayed live as well as accessed for review at any time later. Consequently, every step before, during and after the operation is completely retraceable and reproducible.

The Carl Zeiss Meditec portfolio of systems for the ophthalmic OR is rounded off by the OPMI Lumera® und OPMI Lumera® T surgical microscopes, already well established in the market. Together with the SCI™ technology (patent pending), surgeons are able to easily detect details of the eye previously barely visible to the human eye. “The details made visible with this microscope are truly exceptional and unprecedented. For me, OPMI Lumera® has added a whole new dimension of improvement to my surgery,” as Dr. Richard Packard, a leading ophthalmic surgeon from Great Britain, reports. The detail precision of OPMI Lumera® offers several clinical advantages, particularly for demanding cases such as cataract operations involving narrow pupils, far advanced cataracts, visualization of zonula fibers to prevent unwanted tearing during capsulorhexis, the removal of extremely small cellular debris or when confronted with a capsule tear. Capsule staining, for example, is no longer necessary for the safe removal of smallest cell fragments, thus reducing the recurrence of further cataract development and other complications.

The integrated video monitor of OPMI Lumera® T allows the entire surgical staff to monitor the OR procedure and independently prepare subseqent steps – an important step toward a seamless workflow.
