Carl Zeiss is dedicated to ensuring that millions of people around the world can receive and pay for treatment of their eye diseases. The company helps not only with donations but also develops programs which help patients receive the best possible care. An example of this commitment is in Bandung, Indonesia, where a training center for ophthalmology has now been established.

Carl Zeiss undertakes to set up an ophthalmology training center in each of five regions of the world within the next five years. Together with Dr. Gullapalli N. Rao, the President of the IAPB (International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness), Dr. Michael Kaschke, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, recently opened the first ophthalmology training center in Indonesia. Carl Zeiss is providing the training center with $200,000 and donating slit lamps, treatment lasers and a surgical microscope.

Carl Zeiss is the first industrial sponsor of the “Vision 2020” initiative. For this reason, the company suggested the IAPB establish ophthalmology training centers in different regions of the world. The first of them should open in Southeast Asia. The IAPB studied the sizes of populations, scope and difficulty of eye diseases, existing training programs and available resources of the countries in Southeast Asia. The location of the first eye center was determined by the results. Following an in-depth analysis, the IAPB selected the Cicendo Eye Hospital in Bandung as the location for a high-spec training center. A joint program involving Carl Zeiss, the IAPB and the Cicendo Hospital defined the measures and tasks needed before the start of training.
