Dr. Ludwin Monz has been President and CEO of Carl Zeiss Meditec AG since March 2010 after heading the Ophthalmic Systems strategic business unit from 2008 to 2010. The unit, which is the market leader in its segments with a broad spectrum of diagnostic and therapy products for ophthalmology, was successfully focused on innovations and realigned by Monz during these two years.
Previously, 47-year old Monz headed the business unit now known as Micro Surgery for over 6 years. Great challenges were involved in rejuvenating the product portfolio, in improving the company's competitiveness by adopting a clear innovation orientation, and in facilitating growth in a difficult market environment. Besides developing suitable innovation and market strategies, especially in the field of software, Monz also paid particular attention to establishing lean and efficient corporate processes. His commitment helped turn the division into a highly profitable growth sector within the company. Under his management, a number of products were launched which now serve as benchmarks for the industry.
After obtaining his PhD in Physics, Monz spent a year as Invited Visiting Scientist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, USA, before joining Carl Zeiss as a scientist in 1994. He quickly advanced within the Carl Zeiss organization, starting as Head of Geodesic Systems Product Development, before being made general manager for this division which he led in a joint-venture with a Swedish-American company. After obtaining an MBA from Henley Management College in the UK he then joined Carl Zeiss medical technology in 2000 where he was initially responsible for the development of surgical microscopes for microsurgery.
Monz's enthusiasm for science and technology combined with his interest in medical applications pays dividends in his work. He has a passion for outdoor pursuits and is a photography enthusiast. | |
