Innovations Spanning Cataract/Refractive, Retina and Glaucoma Subspecialties Featured at 2008 American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Meeting Downloads and Links

Dublin, 04/05/2008. Carl Zeiss Meditec, a leader in ophthalmic devices and surgical systems, today announced its newest innovations at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS) meeting in Chicago, IL. These new products include diagnostic and surgical applications that support all major segments of ophthalmology, including cataract/refractive, retina and glaucoma. The products will be featured for first time at exhibit #2028.

Three new platforms, each designed to be scalable and expandable for long-term operation, will be unveiled:
· The Cirrus™ HD-OCT is the first in its category to deliver 3D maps of segmented retinal layers, enabling clinicians to quickly and easily see high definition retinal images for a more accurate picture of a patient’s disease state. The new glaucoma tools provide detailed, highly reproducible RNFL measurements and comparisons to normal values which are critical for glaucoma management.
· The new VISULAS Trion multi-color laser offers the most advanced photocoagulation system to date with superior power, reliable performance and stability at yellow, red and green wavelengths. The laser features intuitive touch navigation and integrates with the ZEISS Laser Slit Lamp.
· The new Visante™ OCT Software offers complete anterior and posterior corneal topography with high-resolution OCT and the renowned ATLAS® Placido disk technology. This combination will allow clinicians to measure the thickness of the cornea and more precisely view pathologies, anatomical and structural issues, and the curvature and back of the cornea.

Additionally, Carl Zeiss Meditec continues its tradition of developing advanced applications for existing platforms to improve their functionality and scalability, including:
· New Guided Progression Analysis™ (GPA) software, which accurately predicts a patient’s stage of disease, rate of progression and risk of future vision loss by measuring statistically significant change. GPA is available with the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA II-i), Stratus OCT™ and GDx™ Review software.
· Stratus OCT is the most trusted and widely used device for retinal scanning. With the introduction of Advanced Serial Analysis software, clinicians are given new applications to facilitate the interpretation of glaucoma and retinal analysis.

Carl Zeiss Meditec is also making significant strides in the integration of surgical tools and diagnostics to improve the overall experience for clinicians and patients alike. An Integrated OR suite will offer a first look at the seamless integration of these new technologies:
· The OPMI Lumera® and OPMI Lumera® T are the latest surgical microscopes from Carl Zeiss. With breakthroughs in illumination technology that increases stability, contrast and brilliance of the red reflex, the Lumera microscopes enable clinicians to see the eye in unprecedented detail.
· The unique ZEISS Optic (ZO®) Aspheric IOLs enable reduction and control of the spherical aberrations of the eye while showing low sensitivity to decentration and tilt. These lenses achieve the maximum visual quality for the largest range of patients.
· New axial length algorithms and improved keratotometry are now available on the IOLMaster® non-contact biometer. Enhanced evaluation capabilities help increase the number of measurable patients, enhance workflow and increase practice efficiency.
· CALLISTO eye is an integrated workflow system for ophthalmic surgery. It includes software for patient administration, video recording and a touch screen PC for accessibility and control of all functions in the operating room.

Additional progress is being made in other surgical and refractive applications, including the integration of the MEL 80™ excimer laser and VisuMax® Femtosecond laser. This integrated approach will be discussed at the Innovation Symposium - Refractive Highlights event on Monday, April 7, 2008 from 6:00 – 10:00 pm at the Sheraton Hotel and Towers in Chicago, IL.

“Technology in the medical domain is only truly innovative if it delivers measurable clinical benefits and lifestyle improvements for patients,” said Jim Taylor, Carl Zeiss Meditec president and chief executive officer. “In addition to bringing new products to market, we are committed to building scalable platforms, developing advanced software and investing in research that enables physicians to provide better diagnosis and treatment options to their patients. When these efforts translate to improved visual outcomes and quality of life enhancements, we know that we have created technology that is making a difference.”

About Carl Zeiss Meditec

Carl Zeiss Meditec AG (ISIN: DE 0005313704) is one of the world’s leading medical technology companies. This market position is based on over 160 years of experience in optical innovation.

The company has two primary areas of activity: In the field of ophthalmology Carl Zeiss Meditec offers integrated solutions for treating the four main eye ailments: vision defects (refraction), cataract, glaucoma and retinal disorders. The company’s system solutions are employed in all phases of the disease management, from diagnosis to treatment and aftercare. Carl Zeiss Meditec has always applied its technological expertise to product innovations. These innovations range from basic systems such as slit lamps and fundus cameras to standard setting diagnostic systems such as the Humphrey® Field Analyzer, the Stratus OCT™ and the IOLMaster®, through to the surgical microscopes and innovative treatment systems in refractive laser surgery. The product portfolio in ophthalmic surgery is rounded off by intraocular lenses and consumables.

In the field of neuro and ENT surgery, Carl Zeiss Meditec is the world’s leading provider of surgical microscopes and microsurgical visualization solutions for a very broad range of applications, such as tumor and vascular surgery in the head region and/or spinal surgery. The most recent example of the innovative performance in the area of microsurgery is the OPMI Pentero® visualization system, which allows efficient and ergonomic patient treatment. Carl Zeiss Meditec will systematically expand its product range in this area and become a solution provider in neuro and ENT surgery as well.

Carl Zeiss Meditec’s medical technology portfolio is rounded off by visualization systems for doctors in private practice and promising future technologies such as intraoperative radiation therapy, which allows the targeted treatment of breast cancer and brain cancer directly during surgery.

Carl Zeiss Meditec AG is based in Jena, Germany, with subsidiaries in Germany (Carl Zeiss Surgical GmbH, Carl Zeiss Meditec Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH, *Acri.Tec AG and Carl Zeiss Medical Software GmbH), the USA (Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., Dublin), in Japan (Carl Zeiss Meditec Co., Ltd., Tokyo), Spain (Carl Zeiss Meditec Iberia S.A., Madrid) and France (Carl Zeiss Meditec S.A.S., La Rochelle, and Carl Zeiss Meditec France SAS, Le Pecq).
